There are several campsites at Unicoi, including really neat looking "soup can cabins," as our group dubbed them. The lake also has a beach and fishing docks. There are twelve miles of trails all together. Also, there is geocaching, canoe or kayak rentals, and this park is part of the Muddy Spokes club as well.
This long boardwalk out into the center of the pond was a nice place to stop for a moment and take some silly photos together. My brother and girlfriend had only just gotten engaged the night before after dinner at the cabin, in front of her parents and ours. It was really sweet! We took this beautiful backdrop as an opportunity to sit and cut up for a moment.
My sweet husband came along to humor me. This isn't really his cup of tea but he knows how much I love it so he was a good sport about this wet trip.
Much to my disappointment, and everyone else's delight, the trail was closed. We only got to hike about half a mile's worth of the Lake Loop trail. We turned around and headed back to the cabin, as it was beginning to rain again anyway.
It was a beautiful park, and quiet. It rained the whole weekend we were in the mountains so this trip was a little damp. We tried the Lake Loop trail, which is about two miles around the little mountain lake there. I'm sure if we come back to Helen again next year, I will make another trip to Unicoi. Perhaps without my grumbling but oh so silly hiking partners.
